Mystery of Reflection

Mystery of Reflection

Pencil and Color-pencil. Walking through the streets of Hong Kong, I stopped and felt compelled to look at the intriguing reflection that caught my eye. I was amazed by the unique perspective of the city that I have not seen before. After drawing a quick sketch and taking a picture at the site, I then finished it in a studio class.

The Twilight of Life

The Twilight of Life

Watercolor. Visiting rural towns in Korea, I saw an old man coming back from fishing. Looking at his curved back and wrinkled hands, I begin to imagine the struggles and the hard work that he has put in to live his inspiring life. Although he may appear an elderly figure, he is still determined to work diligently and peacefully.

Greed

Greed

Mixed Media. The main theme of this piece is greed and ambition. Although some sort of ambition motivates us to become successful, too much greed and ambition will lead to unexpected results. Although we tend to go in a certain direction hoping to achieve our goals and desires, the results at the end don't always lead to the right solutions; instead, we face different adversities and difficult problems that were unintended.

Narrowing Down

Narrowing Down

Pen and watercolor pencil. With this very unique view, I tried to study the perspectives of interior space. Also, I focused on a certain area to bring out the details of the drawing.

Ark 1

Ark 1

3D work. When I was given a 3D project in one of my art classes, I wanted to explore and combine the solid and void plains to make this 3D piece. With the void plains, I have come up with the idea of filling it in with lizard skin patterns. Furthermore, I have used the organic and irregular patterns with the sharp and clean shapes to form a single entity.

Ark 2

Church Alley

Church Alley

Charcoal. Direct observation of a local church alley.

Our Busy Society

Our Busy Society

Pencil. Walking through the busy society, I drop an ice cream on the floor. Looking down at the ice cream, I also notice different kinds of people moving through the crowded hallway. Living in this busy world and adapting to a fast paced lifestyle, we tend to go through our early and current days to live a better life in the future, but we sometimes lose and miss out on many precious things and circumstances such as our family, relationships, and health, like the melting ice cream on the floor.

Landscape

Landscape

Pen and watercolor. The depth created by different architectural shapes got me interested in starting this piece. I learned to convey the perspectives.

Identities

Identities

Mixed Media. We live in a society where we belong in certain status or positions like as a businessman, wife, husband, student, leader, or employee. We cannot simply avoid or let go of those identities, but sometimes we feel too pressured or stressed to live a life in those social status or positions. With that in mind, I tried to express those feelings in this piece with different symbols and objects that people want to ignore or are ignored by others.

I believe as an artist and a designer, the basic fundamental aspects of any art comes from our body. It is important to study and learn from our body to design and come up with new and original ideas that will change the way we live our society.

Trust and Follow

Trust and Follow

Acrylic. In this painting, the dad is teaching his daughter how to walk down the stairs. It is a challenge as a daughter to trust her dad to go through a new task, without knowing the outcome. However, as a dad, knowing that it is only difficult for a first time, he wants his daughter to follow him in his direction and achieve a new accomplishment. We go through many adversities and new assignments that requires us to overcome fear and doubts to move forward to the next stages of life.

Figure Drawing 2

Figure Drawing 2

Charcoal and Pastel. Depicting a pose of my friend who was into his phone. Several quick sketches were made and I finished it with color pastel.

Hand Study

Hand Study

Pen and watercolor. With this piece, I studied different motions and muscles in our working hands.

In the Train

In the Train

Acrylic. Traveling in a train, I have noticed a young man who was focused on his book. The moment caught my eye as a peaceful scene. I began to sketch with a pencil first, and I finished it with acrylic paints at my art studio.

Behind the Object

Behind the Object

I chose to study the light bulbs to learn more about the different aspects of technology and inventions. Light bulbs are something that we cannot simply live without, and we continue to develop and design new ideas to improve and widen the types of light bulbs for different usage. I believe as a designer, it is not only important to design an object to look beautiful and elegant, but also to study and know the information and technology behind the object to come up with new and original ideas.
